More than 100 Western academics and former diplomats urged Beijing to release two Canadians detained last month, warning that the detentions during a diplomatic row with Canada will heighten distrust of China.

The open letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, released Monday, criticized the detentions of researcher Michael Kovrig and entrepreneur Michael Spavor, which it said are leading Western experts to reconsider travel to China as too risky.
